Tampa, Florida 2002 - Manatee Sightings

(Updated 04/15/03)

One thing Laurie had to do while in Florida was try to see a live Manatee. They hang out in the warm waters of Florida and some of them have a tough live. They are huge, slow moving mammals that are often injured and killed by passing boats who don't see them until it's too late. We headed to Apollo Beach and the Manatee Viewing Center to try and catch a glimpse of them. They spend almost all their time in the water, only coming to the surface to poke their nose out and grab some air. It was difficult to see them, but we did manage to see one or two.

If you would like more information, visit www.SaveTheManatee.org. There is also a Manatee Cam, but the few times I looked at it, I couldn't see anything.
